Project Name : Development of Tilapia processing and marketing in the big Latin American river basins

This project, developed in the low São Francisco valley in North-Eastern Brazil (States of Sergipe and Alagoas) and in the Venezuelan State of Barinas, intends to bring answers to fishfarmers whose ponds are full of fish and who do not know well what to do from then on.

The answers include :


- the realization of seafood market surveys in 7 cities neighbouring the production areas in both countries and of a world market study for tilapia;
- the training of cooperative members in marketing strategy and logistics planning;
- the presentation of cooperatives tilapia products and contacts with buyers in a major international seafood fair;
- the installation of 3 pilot tilapia processing plants, coupled with 3 ice plants in both countries and the training of cooperatives members in fish processing and in quality control;
- the development of the concept and the legal registration of seals of origin applied to both producing areas, including the definition of specific local production standards;
- the support to local cooperatives for the preparation of business plans previous to their applications for loans.
